Seltzer Bottles
Seltzer bottles were introduced in the 19th century as a means for dispensing quick spurts of carbonated liquid without having to open and subsequently spoil the carbonation of an entire bottle. Taverns, bars and soda fountains made daily use of seltzer bottles. Still in use today, clear- and colored-glass seltzer bottles are also attractive decorative pieces. Prices range from $28-$75, depending on the piece, manufacturer and age. Bright Ideas: Seltzer bottles from the 1940s and after are safe to use today. Use them in lieu of a standard water pitcher at a dinner party. You can also fill seltzer bottles with colored marbles and use as bookends, or simply create a grouping of bottles filled with fresh flowers or twigs on a coffee table or mantel. You can also use them to replace unattractive plastic watering cans and leave them out next to the houseplants for decoration. By Rebecca J. Razo Photo by Jaimee Itagaki
