Accommodations and Attractions

Alameda

Located on Alameda Island and Bay Farm Island, the city of Alameda faces the San Francisco Bay. After flea marketing, take time to walk along the city’s beautiful beaches and stroll through neighborhoods filled with Victorian-era homes.

At the end of the day, slip across the bay to stay at the Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast. The antique-filled, European-style inn has a colorful history. The building, built in 1875, was originally a bordello and saloon. (415) 931-1875 or bedandbreakfastsf.com

If you stay at the Inn San Francisco, relax on the rooftop deck and enjoy a view that includes Cathedral Hill, Union Square and the Bay Bridge. Inside, the 1872 Italianate mansion features luxurious rooms full of period antiques. (415) 641-0188 or innsf.com

After a brief rest, slip back into your comfortable shoes and head out for a walking tour of San Francisco’s Pacific Heights and Cow Hollow architecture. As you view more than 200 Victorian structures, your guide offers a history lesson on the various styles of the era. (415) 252-9485 or victorianhomewalk.com

Remnants of the Past Vintage Show

At the Remnants of the Past Vintage Show, you’ll find silver champagne buckets full of antique flatware, rustic burlap pillows adorned with felt flowers and old portraits of other people’s ancestors. Look up and you’re likely to spot handcrafted chandeliers that manage to look both whimsical and industrial. And that’s just a start.

Former antique shop owner, Judy Watkins, started the show in 2007, and it’s already a favorite with shoppers and shelter magazines alike. Romantic Homes magazine gave it top billing in its 2011 list of the top 10 romantic flea markets. Shabby Chic author Rachael Ashwell named Remnants of the Past as one of her five favorite flea markets.

Remnants of the Past is a family affair. You’ll see Judy’s husband and children on duty at the show. Feel free to bring your menfolk too. If they get tired of shopping, they can relax in the designated Man Cave until it’s time to load the car.

The Remnants of the Past Vintage Show takes place at the Alex Madonna Expo Center in San Luis Obispo, California, typically in June and October. The next show is scheduled for June 2 and 3, 2012.

Treasure Island Flea

Treasure Island Flea—one of San Francisco’s newest flea markets—features more than just traditional flea market fare. You’ll still find lots of antique and vintage items, but organizers started the market in 2011 as a showcase for indie designers in the Bay Area.

Many of the designers fashion their wares from recycled and repurposed materials. The husband-and-wife team of The Castle Walls (thecastlewalls.com) are good examples. James makes steampunk jewelry from old clocks and watches, and Mary makes her pieces from vintage board-game tiles. Cisco of Restore & Rework (restoreandrework.com) upcycles just about everything into new furniture and home accessories.

Treasure Island Flea takes place on the last Saturday and Sunday of the month, on historic Treasure Island. Though typically an open-air market, the flea market is moving indoors for the rainy season. Through the end of March, look for Treasure Island Flea inside One Avenue of the Palms, which is the last building standing from the 1939 San Francisco World Fair.

Accommodations and Attractions

Spend the night within walking distance of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile at the Gold Coast Guest House Bed & Breakfast. The 1873 townhouse has four guest suites and a lush, two-level garden. (312) 337-0362 or bbchicago.com

For a quiet rest after your Chicago flea market trip, stay at the Old Victorian Farmhouse Bed & Breakfast in Wauconda. The 150-year-old, well-appointed farmhouse overlooks Main Street. Book high tea for the afternoon, or plan to visit during one of the murder mystery dinners. (847) 526-9271 or oldvictorianfarmhouse.com

Take an architectural boat tour on the Chicago River to view more than 40 of the city’s most famous landmarks. As you cruise in comfort, learn about the Chicago’s history from your tour guide. (888) 881-3284 or chicagotours.us

Spend some time exploring The Field Museum, Chicago’s largest cabinet of curiosity. The renowned natural history museum contains in excess of 20 million specimens and artifacts, including collections from the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. (312) 922-9410 or fieldmuseum.org

The Randolph

Street Market

Chicago’s Randolph Street Market is part antique show, part artisan market, part fashion house and all party.

You won’t find booths full of tube socks and toiletries, not unless the tube socks are hand-knitted from hand-spun yarn and the toiletries are brewed in the vendor’s home laboratory. The market turns down four applicants for every vendor they approve. Then, they arrange the vendors “the way one seats a dinner party.” Market organizers look for personality, display style and chemistry between the vendors.

Though unusual, the Randolph Street Market system seems to work. Shoppers blanket the monthly market, and many of the vendors have been discovered by Hollywood set decorators, stylists, store merchandisers and art buyers.

The Randolph Street Market opens for business on one weekend each month. Special market sections include the Chicago Antique Market, the Indie Designer Market and Modern Vintage Chicago. What’s coming next? Who knows, but you can bet you’ll have a blast.

Zurko Promotions

When you attend one of Zurko Promotions’ late- or all-night flea markets, you may spot your next-door neighbor shopping in his pajamas. If you go in late October, you might even end up haggling with Count Dracula.

Shoppers have favored the All-Night Flea Market for years. It takes place on the third

Saturday of every August. Based on last year’s success, the Haunted Halloween Flea Market is on its way to becoming legend too. Both flea markets are located at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, Illinois.

Zurko typically organizes around 40 weekend events each year, including antique shows and flea markets across Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. The monthly Antique Market at the Grayslake County Fairgrounds in Libertyville, Illinois features nearly 100,000 square feet of antiques indoors, and that’s not counting the outdoor booths.

After 44 years in business, Bob Zurko believes in his events and his merchandise. He’ll proudly tell you, “Unlike stocks, antiques never go to zero.”

Springfield Antique Show & Flea Market

When you attend the Springfield Antique Show & Flea Market, you’ll bump elbows with some of the nation’s most successful antique dealers, not all of them selling. Many are shopping to fill their own booths and retail shops. The pieces are fine enough to please their most discriminating customers, and the selling prices are low enough to allow for markup. Show producer Jon Jenkins calls it “the most buyable show in the country.”

Jenkins Management also produces the Harwinton/Farmington Antiques & Design Weekend in Harwinton, Connecticut and the Tailgate-Music Valley Show in Hendersonville, Tennessee, which is part of the greater Nashville area. Harwinton weekends take place in June and September. The Nashville event occurs in February.

Recent additions to the Tailgate-Music Valley Show include the Vintage Marketplace, which features original and upcycled art, home furnishings and fashion. After a tremendous response—which included a completely new generation of antique-show shoppers—Jenkins plans to open the Vintage Marketplace at the Springfield shows as of May.

The Springfield Antique Show & Flea Market takes place at Ohio’s Clark County Fairgrounds on the third weekend of each month, except for June, July and December. Jenkins advises first-time attendees to come in May or September, which are three-day Extravaganza weekends with approximately 2000 vendors.

The Farm Chicks

Antiques Show

Just over a decade ago, a neighbor invited Serena Thompson of The Farm Chicks Antiques Show to go through an old homestead on his property. The home contained all of its original contents, as well as a few creative modifications. Serena describes rooms built from old doors and a porch constructed out of bed springs.

Before long, Serena started scouring other neighbors’ farms. She and a friend traded new merchandise for the neighbors’ so-called junk, and eventually had far more than they could use. They decided to hold a barn sale in 2002, and the Farm Chicks Antiques Show was born.

Today, the oft-lauded Farm Chicks Antiques Show has more than 200 sellers, and shoppers flock to the Washington state event from all over the world.

The Farm Chicks Antiques Show takes place on the first Saturday and Sunday of each June at the Spokane County Fairgrounds. Serena describes it as “primarily an antiques show with a tiny bit of handcrafted items mixed in for fun and added style.”

INTERNATIONAL

By Lisa French

Most dedicated flea market shoppers who scour their local markets for art and antiques eventually long to shop bigger markets. For some, that means scheduling a weekend trip across the country. Others dust off their passports and book passages to the some of the world’s most famous international flea markets.

If you’re anxious about shopping abroad for the first time, get your feet wet by joining a group. The Antiques Diva & Co. (antiquesdiva.com) arranges shopping trips to France, England, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Holland. Both Paris Flea Market (parisfleamarket.com) and the Red Shed Tours (redshedonline.com) schedule shopping tours of France. Zurko Promotions (zurkopromotions.com) plans group buying trips to Europe, including a five-city trip to Poland.

For the more adventurous, plan your own vacation around your favorite international flea markets. To get small items home, pack an extra bag in your suitcase or check your airline’s cargo rates. For large purchases, contact the carriers available at your destination for their freight rates, or talk to a local antique dealer about sharing space in a shipping container.

London: New Caledonian Market

Also known as the Bermondsey Market, London’s New Caledonian Market was once a place to trade stolen goods. Today, the hot items are the antique and vintage goods. The popular flea market takes place on the former site of the Bermondsey Abbey.

  • Every Friday

Bermondsey Square on Tower Bridge Road

(012) 7969-1500

The flea market starts at 5 a.m. and the good deals go fast. Plan to arrive as soon as it opens.

Expect to roll up your sleeves and dig. The best treasures are frequently hidden amidst junk.

Paris: Marché aux Puces St-Ouen

The most famous flea market in Paris, Marché aux Puces St-Ouen is made up of 12 smaller flea markets. As you wind your way through alleys containing up to 3,000 stalls, you’ll find everything from inexpensive vintage clothing to fine French antiques.

  • Saturday through Monday

Avenue de la Porte de Clignancourt

marchesauxpuces.fr

Greet the sellers of each stall with “Bonjour” and say “Au Revoir” when you leave the stall, especially if you plan to haggle. It’s considered rude to do otherwise.

Don’t carry a purse, and keep your wallet close at hand. Pickpockets frequent the market.

Rome: PortaPortese Flea Market

When in Rome, shop the maze of open-air stalls at the PortaPortese Flea Market. The goods range from

inexpensive underwear to ancient artifacts of questionable age, but you can snag a few antique and vintage treasures if you hunt. Even if you don’t take anything home, it’s worth the trip for the people watching.

  • Every Sunday

Near the end of VialeTrastevere

Don’t buy anything without negotiating the price. Expect the seller to be better at haggling than you are, but you’ll still get a discount.

You’ll find the antique section on the stretch between the Piazza IppolitoNievo and Trastevere Station.

Don’t play the shell games, and keep your hand on your wallet. The flea market is full of con men and pickpockets.

Athens: Monastiraki Flea Market

The Plaka district of Athens is home to the legendary Monastiraki Flea Market. It’s the largest open-air market in Athens, and you’ll find everything from souvenirs to religious icons to antique furniture.

  • Every Sunday

Pandrosou Street

athensguide.org/ravel-to-athens.html

The crowds get thick as lunchtime draws near. Go early in the morning to beat the rush.

If you’re shopping for antiques, head for the Abyssinia Square area of the flea market.

Tel Aviv: Jaffa Flea Market

If your trip to Israel includes Tel Aviv, don’t leave without shopping the Jaffa Flea Market. You may have to dig through lots of trash to find the treasures, but you’ll get them for a steal. Look especially for rugs, antiques, Persian tiles and housewares made from copper and brass.

  • Sunday through Friday

Yefet and Aleystion Streets, Old Jaffa

+972 3 527 2691

Haggling is an art and a way of life at the Jaffa Flea Market. You don’t have to pay the asking price for anything in the market.

Visit on Sunday morning if you can. That’s when you’ll get the best deals. A fast first sale on the first day of the week is reported to bring the seller luck.
