Bring a touch of vintage charm to your seasonal décor with these vintage-inspired silhouette frames that are completely customizable for the seasons! Made with thrifted frames, a bit of coffee, and your favorite seasonal shapes, this simple project is the perfect way to add a seasonal touch to your home!

What You’ll Need

  • Thrifted picture frames
  • A cup of black coffee
  • A large baking dish
  • Black and white cardstock
  • Printer and scissors (or a cutting machine like a Cricut)
  • Mod Podge
  • Small paintbrush

What To Do

  1. Stain the Cardstock
Once your cup of coffee has cooled, pour it into the baking dish. Submerge your white cardstock in the coffee bath to give it that perfectly aged, vintage look. The longer you leave it in, the darker it will become (I gave mine a quick dip for a lighter aged finish). Make enough stained sheets for each of your frames and lay them flat on towels to dry.
  2. Create Your Silhouettes
While your paper dries, search for silhouettes that fit your theme. You can find them online, purchase designs on Etsy, or create your own. Resize them to fit your frames, then print and cut them out (either by hand or with your cutting machine). The best part? This project is completely customizable for any season…you could do witches for Halloween, reindeer for Christmas, or bunnies for Easter. The options are endless!
  3. Trim and Prepare the Backgrounds
Once your stained cardstock has dried, trim each sheet to fit your thrifted frames. The easiest way to do this is to remove the glass, trace around it, and cut along the outline.
  4. Assemble
Using a small paintbrush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the back of your silhouette and press it onto the center of your trimmed cardstock. Smooth out any bubbles and let it dry completely. Repeat for each piece.
  5. Frame and Style
Once everything is dry, pop your finished artwork into the frames and style them! They look great grouped together on a mantel or shelf, or hung as a gallery wall!

Tips

Double-Sided Decor

If you love switching up your décor for the seasons, make your silhouettes reversible! I added witches to one side and Christmas designs on the other. This way, when it’s time to change things up for a new season, all I have to do is flip the cardstock.

Budget-Friendly Frames

Don’t overlook your local Goodwill or thrift store for vintage frames. You can often find beautiful ones for as little as fifty cents!
